On smaller compressors, the most essential CFM rate is at 90 PSI because that is the pressure necessary to run most tools. Tools that demand more air volume, such as air wrenches and nail guns, necessitate a higher CFM.

  1. Tank Dimensions

A compressor tank is only used to store air. The more critical factor is having a large enough pump and engine to provide adequate air. Smaller tanks, typically four to six gallons in size, are appropriate for applications that do not require continuous usage, such as air nailers. A larger tank capacity is preferable for operations that demand more continuous flow, such as spray painting and sanding or impact wrenches.

Single-stage compressors generate pressure up to 135 PSI and are appropriate for smaller air tools. For bigger tools, an industrial two-stage compressor rises up to around 90 PSI in the first stage and then develops up to about 175 PSI in the second stage.

  1. The duty cycle

The duty cycle is the length of time the compressor can operate before it overheats. It is represented as a percentage of the amount of time the compressors run in a 10-minute period. A duty-cycle rating of 50% indicates that the compressor can run for five minutes in a 10-minute period. For tools that must operate continuously, a greater duty-cycle rating is necessary.

Assess the sorts of air tools you will be using after taking into account all of your factors. Select the air tool with the highest CFM at the specified PSI. As a buffer, add 50% to the needed CFM. For example, if a one-half inch impact wrench required 5.0 CFM at 90 PSI, the compressor should provide around 7.5 CFM at 90 PSI.
