The Advantages and Disadvantages of Die Casting

Die casting is used to make a wide range of goods, from cylinder heads and engine blocks to garden furniture and bicycle frames. It entails filling a mould cavity with pressured molten metal. The raw metal is heated before being pushed into a mould cavity. The newly formed casting is expelled once the molten metal has cooled and hardened. While die casting is a flexible casting technique, it has both benefits and drawbacks for manufacturing firms.

Advantage

Many different metals and alloys can be used in die casting. Zinc is a common material for this casting technique because of its excellent ductility and strength. It’s also reasonably priced, making it perfect for large-scale industrial applications. Aluminum, magnesium, copper, lead, and tin are among the other metals and alloys supported by die casting.

Die casting eliminates the need for manufacturing businesses to worry about rough or stiff casting surfaces. Because it uses pressured molten metal, it may produce super-smooth casting surfaces. When the molten metal is pushed into the mould cavity, it fully fills the otherwise empty area, resulting in a smooth surface.

Another advantage of die casting is that it reduces the requirement for finishing procedures. Castings are frequently finished by machine in various sorts of casting procedures. Secondary machining processes can be time-consuming and inconvenient. The good news is that die casting eliminates the necessity for such procedures. In many situations, castings are ready to ship immediately following the casting process.

Disadvantage

Die casting, on the other hand, is rather costly when compared to other casting techniques. It necessitates the use of a specialised casting machine, which is both expensive to acquire and maintain. Manufacturing firms can save money by casting in zinc, although die casting is still a rather expensive casting technique.

Die casting also has weight requirements that must be met by the castings. A normal casting, for example, may need a weight ranging from 1 ounce to 15 pounds. If the casting weighs more or less, it has a flaw.
